Data Retention Policy
This Data Retention Policy explains how Stepin ("we", "us", or "our") retains, stores, and deletes personal data collected through its platform.
This Policy is aligned with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (India) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
1. RETENTION PRINCIPLES
Stepin follows:
- Data minimisation
- Purpose limitation
- Storage limitation
Personal data is retained only for as long as necessary to provide platform services, maintain operational continuity, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and ensure platform safety.
2. ACCOUNT DATA
Data such as Name, Contact details, and User role (Owner / Tenant / Guest) is retained for the duration of an active account.
Upon account deletion, data will be deleted within a reasonable timeframe unless retention is legally required.
3. OCCUPANCY DATA
Data such as Residency history, Property association, and Join / vacate status may be retained for a limited period after tenancy ends for:
- Operational continuity
- Dispute resolution
- Fraud prevention
4. COMMUNICATION DATA
Platform communications may be retained for safety monitoring, dispute handling, and service integrity. Retention duration depends on operational necessity.
5. DOCUMENT DATA (VOLUNTARY UPLOADS)
Uploaded documents such as Government ID, Rental agreements, and Address proof are retained until the user deletes them or until account closure. Users may request deletion at any time.
6. LEGAL RETENTION
Certain data may be retained beyond normal timelines if necessary for legal compliance, law enforcement requests, fraud detection, or regulatory obligations.
7. USER DELETION RIGHTS
Users may request:
- Account deletion
- Document removal
- Data erasure

subject to legal requirements.
8. ANONYMISATION
Where deletion is not feasible, data may be Anonymised or De-identified, and retained for Analytics, System integrity, or Compliance purposes. Such data will no longer identify individuals.
9. POLICY UPDATES
We may update this Policy periodically. Continued use implies acceptance.
